You may have noticed a lot of activity around legislation called SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) lately. The official reason for these proposed acts is to protect creative folks such as writers, artists and filmmakers from having their work taken and used without their consent or any recompense.
The problem is that these acts don’t actually accomplish that; and they can go a long way towards censoring communication on the internet.
The video posted immediately before this post does a great job of explaining the potential problems with these acts.
Now, as a writer, I’d just as soon that folks don’t steal my work. But these acts won’t fix that problem. In my opinion, Washington needs to scrap these and go back to the drawing board.
Right now, SOPA and PIPA are on hold but they’re not dead in the water. If you think, after looking at them, that they’re a bad idea, I’d encourage you to contact your legislators, sign petitions, and otherwise make your opinion as a US citizen felt.
Because we all have the world that we permit together
