Does Your Muse Run Away?…

On 6/8/12, I posted on a comment I’d read online where a woman asked what do you do when your Muse runs away.

I thought that this as an interesting question, and so I brought it to this blog, asking what you did when your Muse ran away (a question worth thinking about and discussing with others, in my opinion.)

In that same thread, a young man said that it’s nonsense to think that your Muse can run away from you. He says that inspiration comes from within and not outside of you; that if you’re having problems writing, the solution is to buckle down and write; and that only divas and drama queens blame things on writer’s block or “a Muse running away.”

Interesting as well to me. That sets up an entire spectrum or range for how one thinks about inspiration and writing skills.

What do you think?

  • Is all inspiration an inside job, or does it come from without as well as within?
  • Does writer’s block exist?
  • Can your Muse “run away from you”?
  • What do you do to get her back?
  • Can you write yourself out of writer’s block?
  • What do you think about this whole topic?
