Filk- Sing What You Know

When you’re setting out to take a song and change it into a totally different song, one important step is to know the ground where you’re starting out. Start with a song that you know by heart- one that you could perform in your sleep, one that you already have a close knowledge of.

Part of a good filk is transforming the song but still staying close enough to the original that other people can see the song you started with- and to do that, you need to really know your original starting point. The words, the tune, the place where that one note quavers

So, start with a song you know…
