Just Breathe (Writing Quick Tip)

Are you stuck? The words won’t come?

Then try leaning back and breathing.

One of the sources of writer’s block is tension. You get tense, the words slow down, that makes you tenser, and the words come slower, until at last, the words stop dead.

Stop.

Don’t feed into the cycle.

Instead, lean back in your chair, close your eyes.

Take a l-o-n-g, s-l-o-w, d-e-e-p breath.

Let go of thoughts about writing for a minute, and just focus on the breath.

Breath out, taking your time about it. Feel your muscles relax as the tension leaves them. Feel your consciousness relax as well.

If you need to, take another   l-o-n-g, s-l-o-w, d-e-e-p breath. Rinse and repeat as needed. You’ve got time. You’ve got air. You’ve got words enough for three people, so take the time that you need to put them all together.

Relax.

Breathe.
