It’s the first day of NaNoWriMo and it’s time to write. If you’re a planner, you may have a story idea in mind and maybe a basic outline. If you’re a pantser, you may not know where you’re going, but you’re probably typing away, sure that it’s going to be a wonderful journey-
but whether pantser or planner, some of us are stuck. Staring at that blank page. Not sure where to start.
It’s ok. Have faith. Things will happen.
In the meantime, some things you can do are
- if you haven’t already done so, bop over to http://nanowrimo.org/ If you haven’t already, set up your page and type a few ideas about yourself or your soon to be manuscript. Feel free to be outrageous – you can change it later on
- read some of the letters from Nano or cruise the forums to get yourself in a writer headspace or get some ideas
- think about what kind of thing you like to read. that’s a good thing to write, you know. What kind of book would you like to read that you haven’t seen out there yet? Write that
- most of all just put your butt in the seat, your fingers on the keys and write. even if you start with “I don’t know what I’m going to write but I’m going to keep typing until something occurs to me” you’re still writing- and many times I’ve found that technique has drawn amazing stories out of the mist and onto my pages
Just write. write. and then write some more. Make that word count.
And have fun. We’re all here with you
