Words Have Power

Throughout history, people have always known that words have power, and recent events have shown us even more clearly that this is the case. Words have

  • the power to clarify
  • the power to obscure12180792_10153705594124375_16463828_o
  • the power to inspire
  • the power to deceive

That’s one important reason to learn different words , chose your words carefully and chose the right word for what you’re trying to accomplish.

Some great ways to build the power of your words?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary page on Facebook  – let them send you a word of the day and enjoy what they have to teach you about words.

The Grandiloquent Word of the Day on Facebook – encounter words you wouldn’t normally see but that may be just the word you’re looking for .

Free Rice .com – Have fun. Play games. Learn words, grammar or other things. Feed people who’d otherwise go hungry around the world

Three great references to learn more words and give your writing more power.

Enjoy

When the Computer Goes Down…

The plan was to get a lot of writing done this weekend. Blog posts. More chapters on the book. Outlines and ideas for future projects.

but then my computer went down…

AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

whew

and that’s when the scary questions arose12170008_10153699837464375_2092518322_o

  • would I lose the 3/4 of the book I’d already written?
  • would I be able to meet my other writing deadlines?
  • could the computer be fixed?
  • how much would it cost?
  • would it be cheaper to buy a new one than to fix the present magic carpet?

I turned it off and on again multiple times. I checked the internet connection. I rebooted the modem. I prayed.

and after 3 hours, I called my local computer repair site and asked their advice. They told me to bring it in. Placing it on the counter, the man in charge pressed the on button

Once

And everything came back online

Magic!

(They didn’t charge me anything either)

I asked the man with the magic fingers what happened. He said that often happens to computers as they get older, usually because of a flicker in the power source, and I was the second one he had that day. No advice on anything I could do to prevent it

so it’s a mystery.

But I’m back online and working on catching up on the writing I’d planned to be doing

May your computer never go down, but if it does, may there be someone with magic fingers in your life too…

Writing, per Fisher (Inspiration)

Burning candle“I always wrote. I wrote from when I was 12. That was therapeutic for me in those days. I wrote things to get them out of feeling them, and onto paper. So writing in a way saved me, kept me company. I did the traditional thing with falling in love with words, reading books and underlining lines I liked and words I didn’t know. “

Chapter 14 Roughed Out…

…and chapter 15 underway.

I’ve written most of the easier chapters. I’m now onto the chapters that will take more thought and work to write, even in a rough draft. More points to cover. More complex ideas to explain. More things to think about before throwing them down on the page.

And more chapters to write. 17 becomes 18 and then 19 and then 20. Some are new ideas hands with laptop typing in nightthat come up as I write and that really need to be explored in their own particular space. Some are chapters that are so long that they need to be subdivided in order to maintain the flow of the book as a whole.

And still I keep writing.

and then serendipity takes a hand…

We’ve got a big snow storm coming in on Friday, and I’ve run around like a maniac on Thursday, getting all my home visits done so I don’t have to be out driving in a storm that’s getting some very irregular predictions. A long day, and the reports make it even longer, but 95% of it is done and, after a few last details, that leaves me with Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday to write.

Snow day = writing day. Now lets see if I can catch up with my rapidly increasing manuscript and how close I can get to finishing my rough draft.

Wish me luck…

Online Dating (Games Writers Play)

Does your main character have no character to speak of? Do your supporting characters Romantic woman using laptoplack personality?

Then try signing your characters up for an online dating service…

Not literally, of course; but sit down with a blank page and try writing a short blurb that your character might write if he or she was trying to reach out and meet someone for romantic (or nefarious) purposes. Is he or she

  • modest?
  • bombastic?
  • cool?
  • truthful?
  • ridiculously self involved?

What does he emphasize about himself? What would she think would attract other people to her?

Don’t write a novella- just a compact ad that indicates what your character’s like and tries to sell him or her to others

This is a process that may give you more insight into your character and help develop it in a compact format

The Middle, per London (Inspiration)

“As for my writing process, there is one truth I have discovered after writing some twenty-plus books: Burning candleNot every book is the same, but the middle of every book is where I really begin to question my choice of vocations. The beginning and end is usually fairly clear to me, but that middle just sucks the life right out of me.

Recycle (Writing Quick Tip)

Done a lot of research or given a lot of thought to something you’ve written on a particular Romantic woman using laptoptopic?

Think about are there ways that you can use that thought or research to support multiple writing projects.

As an example, did you do some research into meditation? That could become

  • part of a fantasy story
  • a basic how to meditate article
  • a medical piece on how meditation is good for your health
  • a blog post on how to fit meditation into a busy schedule

One topic. Multiple pieces. Good stuff

So if you do the work, before going on to the next topic, think about other ways you could use your ground work

and recycle your knowledge
